Change. (In Unison).
Change. (In Unison). CHANGE. It affects each of us every day of our lives. We"change" our clothes daily. We "change" what we eatfor a meal so our palettes have some variety. Some changes are moresignificant such as a "change" in lifestyle or"change" in location. We "change" the way we teach, incorporating a new technique, a new way of communicating verbally withour students and new piece of music. As a teacher who moved to a newstate five years ago and started an entirely new independent musicstudio, the "change" became an opportunity to assess my goalsand develop a studio that reflected my new thinking, rather than keepdoing the same thing in the same way year after year. Some thrive onchange in their lives, and others approach change cautiously and withtrepidation trepidation/trepidation/ (trep?i-dashun)1. tremor.2. nervous anxiety and fear.trepidanttrepidationn.1. An involuntary trembling or quivering. .Change can be very healthy for us as individuals and for anassociation. Michael H. Annison has said, "The issue isn'twhether or not there will be change, but how we will manage it."Change is the only constant Change Is the Only Constant is an EP by A Change of Pace, released in 2003. Track listing"Queen of Hearts" – 4:35 "Chippie" – 3:01 "Goodbye For Now" – 5:12 "Pearl Summer" – 3:50 "Sell Out" – 4:32 any organization faces. Associations thatcannot or will not change diminish in effectiveness, in membershipnumbers and in the ability to connect with the society in which we liveand work.Do you recall the characters in Spencer Johnson's book, WhoMoved My Cheese? There are two little mice named Sniff and Scurry aswell as two little people named Hem and Haw hem?1?n.1. An edge or border on a piece of cloth, especially a finished edge, as for a garment or curtain, made by folding an edge under and stitching it down.2. . When the four of themdiscovered they no longer had any cheese, Sniff and Scurry immediatelyset out to find some. Hem and Haw, on the other hand, ranted and raved, and screamed, "It's not fair!" Day after day Hem and Hawreturned to the cheese station, but there was no cheese. Meanwhile,Sniff and Scurry were hunting a new food source. Finally, one day Haw haw, common name for several plants, e.g., the hawthorn and the black haw (see honeysuckle). began laughing at himself. "Haw, haw, look at us. We keep doing the same things over and over again and wonderwhy things don't get better. If this wasn't so ridiculous, itwould be even funnier." Haw was scared about striking out on hisown to find some cheese, but he knew that to survive, he had to do justthat. And he did! There were some frightening moments, but Haw realized,"When you move beyond your fear, you feel free." He also cameto the conclusion, "The quicker you let go of old cheese, thesooner you find new cheese." And he found his old mice friends,Sniff and Scurry, when he found a new cheese source. But what about Hem?Read the book to find out about him.Over the past four years that I have served on the Board ofDirectors, the Board has worked very hard to assess the association verycarefully and decide how the association can become more effective andincrease MTNA's influence nationwide. It has spent its time onphilosophical issues and policies, trying to find or improve ways inwhich MTNA MTNA Music Teachers National AssociationMTNA Middle Tennessee Nursery Association (McMinnville, Tennessee)can better serve its members. In its effort to address"change," the Board has become a strong, cohesive cohesive,n the capability to cohere or stick together to form a mass. unit thatcan brainstorm, discuss, debate, make decisions that reflect the bestinterest of the association and manage "change." The diversityof opinion, the number of options and finding the best choice make forlively discussion and exchange of ideas. Board meetings are anything butdull! As of this writing, MTNA has completed its first nationwideelection for national officers to serve on the Board of Directors. Everymember has had the opportunity to vote for the candidates of his or herchoice. Previously, approximately 100 people elected the nationalofficers and now, 24,000 members have had the opportunity to elect thepeople they want to have representing them. What a "change!"With this election, new officers assume the role of governance Governance makes decisions that define expectations, grant power, or verify performance. It consists either of a separate process or of a specific part of management or leadership processes. Sometimes people set up a government to administer these processes and systems. forMTNA. I wish to thank Wayne Gibson, NCTM NCTM National Council of Teachers of MathematicsNCTM Nationally Certified Teacher of MusicNCTM North Carolina Transportation MuseumNCTM National Capital Trolley MuseumNCTM Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage , immediate past president, forhis outstanding service to MTNA, for his vision and guidance, and forhis leadership in helping MTNA "change" the way it governs. The "Music for Everyone" programs implemented in the previoustwo years are a tremendous "change" in recognition and supportof the teachers in the association who teach the music lovers, the musicamateurs and the music students of the next generation. Theseprograms--Music Study Awards, Student Achievement Award and StudioFestival Program--reflect MTNXs mission statement, "To advance thevalue of music study and music making to society." As anindependent music teacher, these programs have enhanced the value ofmusic making in my studio. Have they done that for your studio? As acollege teacher, these programs will increase the possibility of havingmore students continue their musical training at the collegiate collegiate?adj.1. In fact, this year I have more students ofall ages who have always wanted to learn to play the piano in my collegepiano classes.Another huge "change" that has taken place is within theMTNA Competitions. With the growth of the student competitions programover the years, its complexity had reached a point that it took pages ofthe AMT See vPro. to list all the rules and regulations plus a complete handbook For the handbook about Wikipedia, see .This article is about reference works. For the subnotebook computer, see . "Pocket reference" redirects here. for competition volunteers. Even at that, it was often hard to rememberall the rules for each level and instrument. Yet, as a teacher, accompanist, parent and MTNA member volunteer who has participated inthe competitions for more than twenty years TWENTY YEARS. The lapse of twenty years raises a presumption of certain facts, and after such a time, the party against whom the presumption has been raised, will be required to prove a negative to establish his rights. 2. , I know they provide aninvaluable experience for the students. In an effort to make the studentcompetitions more accessible and reflect today's society, aCompetitions Task Force of Paul Stewart Paul Stewart is the name of many notable people: Paul Stewart (Composer/musician/director/Solo Artist) Paul Stewart (writer) - Writer of The Edge Chronicles Paul Stewart (driver) - Motor racing driver/team director, son of World Champion Jackie. , NCTM, chair; Ann Fernandez,NCTM, and Scott McBride Smith, NCTM, surveyed MTNA members across thenation who are involved in competitions, and the task force spent hoursof study and discussion before presenting their conclusions to the Boardof Directors. The Board then spent most of its winter meeting timediscussing the competitions in depth. The results are printed in thisissue of AMT. Yes, there are many "changes." I hope you willunderstand the logic behind the Board's decisions. We owe ourdeepest gratitude Gratitudeagrimonytraditional symbol for gratitude. We can either ignore it and hope it will go away, OR we canembrace it and create a stronger, more viable association. I am votingfor the latter!Phyllis I. Pieffer, NCTMMTNA President
