Oxford University Press has a reputation for publishing topquality reference and textbooks, and this book is no exception. Schrockis professor emeritus of music from the University of Oklahoma University of Oklahoma, abbreviated OU, is a coeducational public research university located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Founded in 1890, it existed in Oklahoma Territory near Indian Territory 17 years before the two became the state of Oklahoma. and drawson his three decades of conducting choirs and chairing graduate choralprograms in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. I would say that Shrock has gone wellbeyond the most "significant" composers as he discusses some19th- and many 20th- century composers of relative known. Did you knowthat Dudley Buck Dudley Buck (March 10, 1839 – October 6, 1909) was an American composer of music. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of a merchant who gave him every opportunity for cultivating his musical talents. from Hartford, Connecticut, composed secular cantatasfor men for the Apollo Club of New York City New York City:see New York, city. New York CityCity (pop., 2000: 8,008,278), southeastern New York, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The largest city in the U.S. and scored withaccompaniment of string quintet, flute, piano and organ? For ease of reference, Shrock has arranged his book first by musichistory time periods and second by country of origin and composerchronological birth date. This allows one to search so as to provide avaried program of music with representative literature from eachhistorical era. It also allows program selection according togeographical region and composer style as well as performing forces.Shrock has also included a glossary of musical terms encountered inchoral music and a composer index for searching alphabetically bycomposer name. Each musical history era and country is introduced with a briefnarrative of the choral music from the geographical region andrepresentative composers. Prominent composers also have a briefbiographical sketch with particular compositional techniques for whichthey might be known, for example Ligeti is known for tone clusters. Selected choral works have performance annotations "accordingto familiarity" with the name, date of composition, voices scoredfor, instrumentation and performance length. This is a practical reference manual for choral directors as Shrockcarefully chose literature that is available in academic and commercialpublications and recognized for their historical significance andacknowledged acclaim. It is by no means an all-inclusive research bookbut should be in the reference library of the practicing choralconductor, teacher of choral conducting or choral literature course.
