Calumet College of St. Joseph ranked most diverse in Midwest. WHITING, IND. Calumet College of St. Joseph Calumet College of St. Joseph is a private university affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church through the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. Its main campus is in Whiting, Indiana, with additional campuses located in Chicago, Illinois, and Merrillville, Indiana. was ranked by U.S. News and WorldReport as the most diverse college in the Midwest since 2000. The magazine compared the college this year to nearly 100 publicand private institutions throughout the Midwest. It again received thedistinction of being first in diversity among all comprehensive collegesin the Midwest that grant bachelor's degrees. The formula used by the national magazine factored in the totalproportion of minority students, not including international studentsand the mix of racial and ethnic groups. "The diversity ranking is important to us because we are acollege that strives to meet the needs of the community we serve,"said Dr. Dennis C. Rittenmeyer, president of Calumet College, in a pressrelease. The private, Catholic college, based in the northwestern Indianacity of Whiting, is sponsored by the Cincinnati Province of theMissionaries of the Precious Blood. We know that minorities are among the most economically andeducationally disadvantaged in our community and in the U.S.," hesays. Having a diverse campus allows students and faculty to learnfirsthand about different ethnicities, backgrounds and religions, saysBrother Jerry Schwieterman, director of campus ministry. Sister Michele Dvorak, vice president for academic affairs, saysthe faculty does a good job creating an accepting culture where peopleof different ethnicities, economic backgrounds and personal situationscan feel comfortable.
