A 19TH-CENTURY GOVERNMENT DRAWING MASTER: The Walter Smith Reader. [BOOK] A 19TH-CENTURY GOVERNMENT DRAWING MASTER: The Walter Smith Walter Smith OBE (born February 24 1948 in Lanark) is a Scottish former football player, but is better known as a football manager. He is currently the manager of Scottish Premier League club Rangers, his second spell in that capacity with the club. Reader (2000; $25, $20 NAEA NAEA National Association of Estate Agents (UK)NAEA National Art Education AssociationNAEA National Association of Enrolled AgentsNAEA National Abstinence Education AssociationNAEA National Atomic Energy Agency members), by F. Graeme Chalmers. NationalArt Education Association, 1916 Association Dr., Reston, VA 20191. At atime when there is great interest in standards for what every studentshould know and do in the arts, it is interesting to read a historicalaccount of Walter Smith. Smith was the English drawing master who, in1871, was invited by the Boston School Committee to be the director ofdrawing for the Boston public schools and the state director of arteducation for Massachusetts. It was all very simple: What was wanted wasa method of teaching drawing (and developing hand-eye coordination) thatwould be useful in the emerging industries of New England. As waswritten by Harry Beck Green (1948): Smith "sought to give thecontent of drawing a rational, scientific basis developed through agraded sequence that all could understand." Chalmers' book tells the story of this remarkable man. Smithis described as a "paradox: demanding and arrogant, ambitious, sometimes ruthless and opportunistic, but dedicated and considered bysome to be a successful `warm-hearted, great-natured man of genius'and by some of his students as gentle and lovable" (p. 2). Thefinal chapters of the book provide a clear sense of the difficultiesencountered by Smith as he sought to advance his ideas: "Frictionand difficulty: Rebellion in the ranks"; "I do not feelresponsible for this horrible persecution"; and "Leaving theUnited States: A whirlwind tempered by a thunderstorm thunderstorm, violent, local atmospheric disturbance accompanied by lightning, thunder, and heavy rain, often by strong gusts of wind, and sometimes by hail. ." All in all, this is a fascinating and informative account thattells us much about efforts to standardize and promulgate To officially announce, to publish, to make known to the public; to formally announce a statute or a decision by a court. approaches tothe teaching of art.-J.J.H.
