Dates and indexes.

Dates and indexes. IGS Board secretary Vanessa Biard-Schaeffer conducted a GS workshopin October at the Irish Cultural Center in Paris. Participants in thatworkshop spent an afternoon receiving an introduction to generalsemantics through diverse exercises and games. The event was very wellattended and a great success and Vanessa is planning to do more GSworkshops in the City of Light. Tres bien, Vanessa! The Australian Society of General Semantics continues to offermonthly GS presentations on a variety of topics. Titles from some recenttalks include "The Non-identifying Personality,""Developing Skills for Applying General SemanticsFormulations," and "Formulations of Self-Reflexiveness."The new president of the AGS is Pauline Davis, who was introduced togeneral semantics in 1989 through an introductory GS course run byLaurie Cox. More information on what is going on at the ASGS can begarnered from their Web site, http://www.ags.org.au The New York Society for General Semantics is also offering monthlypresentations on a number of topics. Titles from some of their recenttalks include "The Logic of Free Will" and "CognitiveDevelopment and Language Acquisition. More information on what is goingon at the NYSGS can be found on their Web site, http://www.nysgs.org IGS executive director Lance Strate chaired a panel titled"General Semantics in the New Century" at the New York StateCommunications Association Conference (NYSCA), which was held inEllenville, New York, in October. On the panel with him were IGSpresident Martin H. Levinson, Hunter College professor and New YorkSociety of General Semantics board member Katherine Liepe-Levinson,Manhattan College professor and IGS trustee Thom Gencarelli, and WesternConnecticut State University professor and ETC editor Bill Petkanas. Inaddition to the panel presentations, GS info and literature weredisseminated to conference attendees. Following the NYSCA conference, Lance flew off to Baroda, India,where he gave a presentation on behalf of the Institute of GeneralSemantics at the Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and OtherHuman Sciences. In May, Lance traveled to Chicago to represent theInstitute at the 2009 International Communications Association (ICA)Conference, where, in addition to an exhibit table, IGS sponsored asession as an ICA affiliate that featured IGS trustee Corey Anton, pasttrustee Bruce Kodish, and Roosevelt University communication professorPeter Fallon. Laura Bertone, the author of The Hidden Side of Babel, a book thatwon the 2009 Hayakawa Book Prize, gave a general semantics presentationin Buenos Aires at the Jorge Luis Borges Foundation on "Legacies ofHope and Meaning." The talk was very well received. It is good toknow that general semantics is alive and well on the continent of SouthAmerica. Two new trustees, Thierri Bardini and Ben Hauck, have joined ourboard. Thierry is associate professor in the Department of Communicationat the Universite de Montreal, where he co-directs the Workshop inRadical Empiricism. A native of France, he holds a degree in agronomy(ENSA Montpellier, 1986) and a PhD in sociology (Paris X Nanterre,1991). The University of Minnesota Press will publish his second book,Junkware: The Coming of Homo Nexus, later this year. Ben is a professional actor, marathon runner, corporate long-formimprovisation teacher, general semantics instructor, author, webmasterfor the Institute of General Semantics and the New York Society forGeneral Semantics, and director with the New York Society for GeneralSemantics. Ben recently worked as a stand-in for Jason Bateman in the2010 film The Baster. The Institute is now listed as one of the sponsors of Media Ethicsmagazine. As part of the arrangement, IGS was able to name twoindividuals to the Media Ethics Editorial Board. IGS trustees CoreyAnton and Thorn Gencarelli are now contributing editors for themagazine.
