Dat andra paseendet: en studie av overgangar i den arkeologiska disciplinens historia. MICHEL NOTELID. Dar andra paseendet: en studie av overgangar i denarkeologiska disciplinens historia (Occasional Papers in Archaeology22). x+217 pages, 2 figures. 2000. Uppsala: Uppsala University Uppsala University (Swedish Uppsala universitet) is a public university in Uppsala, Sweden, 64 kilometres (40 miles) north-northwest of Stockholm.[1] Founded in 1477, it claims to be the oldest university in Scandinavia, outdating the University of Copenhagen Department of Archaeology & Ancient History; 91-506-1436-3 (ISSN ISSNabbr.International Standard Serial Number 1100-6358) paperback Awareness of the discipline's history is always very valuablefor understanding what we are about. Its development in Scandinavia wasespecially important for the rest of the world. Dr NOTELID argues that,in the 19th century, the process there was an empiricist empiricism?n.1. The view that experience, especially of the senses, is the only source of knowledge.2. a. Employment of empirical methods, as in science.b. An empirical conclusion.3. reaction toromanticism but that archaeologists also developed a sense of ethicalresponsibility. Yet he argues that, frustrated, archaeologists havestruggled, since, both with projections of their own desires onto theevidence and the tantalising Adj. 1. tantalising - arousing desire or expectation for something unattainable or mockingly out of reach; "a tantalizing taste of success"tantalizinginviting - attractive and tempting; "an inviting offer"2. , essentially romantic concept of culture --how true. This book is most a propos HOLTORF & KARLSSON,complementing O.W. Jensen in particular (see `Theory', above). Thebook is in Swedish but has abstract and summary in English. J.D. Clifford and C.S. Rafinesque pondered prehistory prehistory, period of human evolution before writing was invented and records kept. The term was coined by Daniel Wilson in 1851. It is followed by protohistory, the period for which we have some records but must still rely largely on archaeological evidence to , monumentsand finds in the USA, and the rest of the world, during the first halfof the 19th century. They were in touch with leading archaeologists andDr BOEWE considers that E.G. Squier plundered Rafinesque'smanuscripts without acknowledgement. Assembling articles andcorrespondence by and to them, Dr BOEWE has revealed a telling mixtureof speculation and observation. Clifford's ideas now lookdelightfully wayward but they are highly learned and motivated by assweeping a historical imagination as the likes of A. von Humboldt or the16th-century Spanish thinkers in Mexico upon whom he comments.Rafinesque compiled records of measured field monuments and undertook alively review of Caleb Atwater's research. The 22 papers assembled by Ms HUXLEY cover the history of Britishobservations and research on Crete from the Middle Ages onward butconcentrating on modern work and its changing emphases. The first partof the book is historical, the second and longer part considers themesof research by period and the forms of evidence, along withcontributions on the British School at Knossos (H. Catling) and on`artists and craftsmen' (R. & S. Hood). The book is wellillustrated and produced elegantly and sturdily -- with appropriatepride. Confining themselves to archaeology as such, Dr LECH Lech(lĕkh), river, c.175 mi (280 km) long, rising in Vorarlberg, W Austria, and flowing NE into S Germany past Augsburg to the Danube River. The Wertach River is its chief tributary. and 23contributors from six countries (including several familiar to ANTIQUITYreaders) assess Gordon Childe's contributions and effects -- andfive passages from his works are provided in an appendix. It isinteresting to see contemporary responses to Childe's marxism fromPoles. A.G. Sherratt remarks that Childe `was ... of his times, andshould be celebrated as such' (p. 409). The papers are in Polishbutbrief summaries are provided in English. See too our picture review of Images from the past.
